Chapter 14
Hero of the Mindweavers
The ale burned Furvâs throat like hot coals, but he tilted the stein toward the innkeeper for another. He could feel Elderâs eyes on his back, but didnât turn to face the disappointment in the holy manâs face. The bruisers were satisfied and were the loudest crowd in the inn. When the innkeeper saw the purse of coppers stolen from Tamaâs vault, he made no protests at the bruiserâs drunken chants and calls to the maidens serving the burning drinks.
Furv sat alone in the darker corner of the inn. Shadows suited the bleak ache in his heart that he was certain would never leave. After abandoning the Cyprus Cliffs through the harvesting tunnels, Furv had stripped the linens and stolen tunics and hosen from a traveling caravan in the lower Gaps between the Cliffs and the empires. The piercings in his ears were gone, the two gold studs in his brows stripped, his nose no longer had blue jewels, but he kept the ring in his lip. It was Kiahâs favorite piercing, and it would serve as his reminder of the beautiful, innocent blood that spilled in the Ring. He never wanted to forget or let his anger die. It was the only fuel he had to keep living.
âI need to speak with you,â Elder said just above a whisper.
âThen speak.â
Seeing Elder without the boiling robes Tama had forced him wear each day was strange. The man was dressed in black, and the clothes heâd taken revealed he was fit and trim as if he were always a soldier ready for battle. Perhaps Elder was no holy man and was a soldier. The way heâd handled a weapon, Furv had no doubt Elder had seen a battle or two in his past life. Yet he spoke as if he were a man of the Mount, and Furv had never questioned his origin before now.
âAre you prepared to hear me?â
Furv gulped the last few drops and gasped loudly. âSpeak, and I will let you know.â
Elder leaned forward and dropped his voice to a low growl. âFurv, this is important. I know you are grieving, and I want you to mourn, but there is more than the two of us now. More we must do or there will be other deathsâlike Kiahâinnocent people will be lost.â
Furv clenched his jaw. âKiah is the only innocent death I care about.â
âWhat about that girl, Agnus?â Furv flinched, and Elder softened his voice. âI understand loss. I am no stranger to it, but donât tell yourself that you only cared about Kiahâshe would not want you to fall into bitterness.â
âIâm surprised you havenât lectured me, Elder. How many times did you warn us? You blame me for this, donât you?â
Elderâs eyes had a calming effect, and the man had a way of soothing even the fiercest heart. âI donât blame you, boy. I donât. I worried for the two of you, but I would never keep you or Kiah from love. This is not your fault.
